Historically considered too high in calories, cheese is often avoided by those following diets. However, several studies show that it can play a key role in balancing lipid metabolism.
A study published by Dr Patrick Marcellin, Professor of Hepatology at the University of Paris and Head of the Viral Hepatitis Research Unit in Beaujon hospital, reveals that consuming certain cheeses helps to:
"A liver in poor health is no longer able to properly store vitamins and minerals such as vitamin D or calcium, which can have repercussions on the entire body," explains Professor Patrick Marcellin.
Cheese can therefore be beneficial, provided that the right varieties are chosen.

Not all cheeses offer the same benefits for liver health. Excess lipids and cholesterol can actually worsen certain liver conditions. Hepatologist Patrick Marcellin therefore recommends moderate consumption, with a maximum intake of 30 to 60 grams per day.
"Cheese should be consumed in moderation—one to two servings of 30 grams per day at most—and it’s best to choose cheeses that are low in fat. The best cheese for the liver is fresh goat or sheep cheese but one can also opt for ricotta, or cottage cheese, which are among the lowest in cholesterol," advises our expert.
